Understanding Roofing Terms: The Top View Way

Roofing comes with its own language, and if you’re not in the industry, some of it can sound like a foreign code. At Top View Roofing, we believe informed customers make the best decisions. That’s why we’ve created this glossary—straightforward definitions of the terms you’re most likely to hear when working with us. Each explanation is tailored to how we do things here in Oklahoma, so you’ll know exactly what to expect from our process, our materials, and our team.

A

Architectural Shingles: High-quality asphalt shingles with a layered, dimensional look.

Why this matters: We recommend architectural shingles for homeowners who want durability and curb appeal in Oklahoma climates.

Asphalt Shingles: The most common roofing material, available in different grades and colors.

Why this matters: Affordable, versatile, and effective for many residential roofs we install.

B

Bootjack (Lead Boot): A lead cover placed around vent pipes to prevent leaks.

Why this matters: We install lead bootjacks on every roof for superior leak protection compared to cheaper alternatives.

C

Commercial Roofing: Roofing systems designed for business properties, such as TPO, PVC, EPDM, spray foam, and metal.

Why this matters: Our commercial roofs are built for durability, efficiency, and minimal business disruption.

Coating: A protective layer applied to extend the life of an existing roof.

Why this matters: A cost-effective option for commercial clients looking to boost performance without a full replacement.

D

Decking: The wooden base layer beneath your roof covering.

Why this matters: We inspect and replace damaged decking to ensure your new roof has a solid foundation.

Drip Edge: Metal flashing along the roof’s edge to guide water into gutters.

Why this matters: Prevents water from seeping under roofing materials, which is critical in heavy Oklahoma rains.

F

Felt Paper (Underlayment): A layer between the decking and shingles for added Protection.

Why this matters: We use 30-lb felt paper, which is stronger and more durable than the standard 15-lb used by many contractors.

Flashing: Thin metal installed around joints, chimneys, and vents to prevent leaks.

Why this matters: Proper flashing installation is essential to keeping your home or business watertight.

M

Metal Roofing: Durable roofing panels made from steel or aluminum.

Why this matters: Ideal for clients who want a long-lasting, low-maintenance roof that can handle Oklahoma storms.

R

Re-Roofing: Adding a new layer of shingles over an existing one.

Why this matters: We typically recommend full tear-offs instead for better long-term performance, but in certain cases, re-roofing can be an option.

Residential Roofing: Roofing systems designed for homes, using materials such as asphalt shingles, metal, or tile.

Why this matters: Our residential roofs are tailored to handle the region’s heat, wind, and seasonal storms.

Roof Replacement: Removing the existing roof and installing a new one.

Why this matters: We follow strict installation standards—six nails per shingle, real starter strips, and lead bootjacks—for durability.

S

Shingle: A roofing element that overlaps with others to shed water and protect the home.

Why this matters: Quality shingles, properly installed, form the foundation of a strong roof.

Soffit: The underside of the roof overhang.

Why this matters: Proper soffit ventilation helps prevent moisture buildup and extends roof life.

Storm Damage Roof Repair: Repairs made after hail, wind, or heavy rain damage.

Why this matters: We respond quickly, secure the property, and assist with insurance claims to restore your roof fast.

T

Tear-Off: The process of removing an existing roof before installing a new one.

Why this matters: We perform complete tear-offs for the strongest, longest-lasting results.

TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin): A single-ply roofing membrane used for commercial applications.

Why this matters: Energy-efficient and reflective, making it perfect for large flat roofs in hot climates.

I probably won’t need roofing work again for a long time, but when I do, I’ll be calling them without hesitation. Highly recommended!

What can I say Darby this man met all my expectations and then some he said his guys will be at my house at 7:30 to start. They pulled up at 7:15 rolled everything out and exactly at 7:30. They were on top of the roof turn down. That did an amazing job on the cleanup. I was a little nervous that there might be some nails left over there wasn’t that took magnets all over to pick those up. I highly recommend using him.

5 star all the way. I had been dealing with shingles for 15 years, they would come off in all weather, even perfect days seemingly. Top View Roofing came in and installed a beautiful, and perfect black metal roof. All screws and lines matched up perfectly, nothing was out of line. They got it done fast, and for the price insurance was going to pay for just shingles. Even had a tornado 2 miles away, nothing even moved, highly recommend! 5 star all the way! It's your mistake if you go with any other company.
